Lunch lecture Iceland

Location: Lumen 1 & 2 Date: 31 may 2010 Time: 12.00 – 13.00h
Recently Iceland was a hot news item because of it’s volcanic (and financial) activity. Over the last years Wageningen UR did research on water flow through basalt formations and on the ecology of Iceland. Every year there are field trips to Iceland, one as an award for best Earth science assignments of secondary school students, another as an excursion within the MSc course ‘Hydrological Processes in Catchments”. During this lecture the general geological setting of Iceland will be explained, with special attention to the Eyjafjalla eruption. The hydrological processes in the catchments of two large rivers, the Jökullsa á Fjöllum and the Þjórsá, will be explained. The rivers and brooks are fed by water that is flowing over impermeable surface, by groundwater from porous rocks and as melting water from snow and glaciers. The catchments of Icelandic rivers are mostly barren or with little vegetation cover in the highlands and with heathland and mire vegetation in the lowlands. The aquatic ecology reflects the productivity of the catchment vegetation and the type of the catchment basin. Most interesting though is the geothermal influence that does river temperatures range between 6 and 23oC in summer and strongly affects the stream fauna.
