Study association Pyrus

Welcome to study association Pyrus. The student association for students of the BSc Soil, Water, Atmosphere and the MSc Earth and Environment at Wageningen University.

The goal of Pyrus is to strengthen the relation between students and between students and teachers. To achieve this we organise different activities, e.g. weekends, excursions, lectures, drinks and the annual cheese fondue. Once per period (five times a year) our association magazine is spread, which contains articles in Dutch and English. The annual highlight of Pyrus is the SK Grondboren (students Soil Drilling Championship), where we try to drill 1.20 meter into the ground as fast as possible.

According to the old Greeks the world consisted of four elements: earth, water, air and fire. In the Bachelor, Soil, Water and Atmosphere, we have already three of the elements. Thinking of a study association name was not that hard, as the study association is an extension of your study; fire. Pyrus is a deviation of the Greek word pyr (fire) and in this way the study is in perfect harmony.

In a nutshell; Pyrus gives that extra element to the studies Bsc Soil, Water, Atmosphere and Msc Earth and Environment at Wageningen University!

Merchandise

New merchandise can be bought using a pre-order system. A link will be sent in the groupchat and newsletter for a merch drop, and using this link you can fill in a form to order the merch item. Payment has to be completed before the merch order is placed.

For items that are kept in stock (e.g. Pyrus hoodies and sport shirts), a link will be sent out a few times per year.

For now, there is still merch in the hutch, which can be bought there. These items have limited supply, and will not be restocked.

Soil drilling championships

The student Soil Drilling Championships have taken place since 1998 and have become a true Pyrus tradition. Drilling through wet clay or hard dry soil, it’s a different challenge every year. The Edelman drill will find a way down, but how fast? That depends on you. Whether you set the fastest time or become the slowpoke of the evening does not matter. Every year it is the most typical student party from Wageningen, with an atmosphere that is known throughout the country. The afterparty is not one to miss, occasionally a caravan gets wrecked (in a far past), and the costumes get better every year. Sadly there is one drawback: the whole event takes only one evening. Of course you would like to show your drilling skills throughout the year, but that’s not possible. That’s why we make this the best night of the year, or at least of October.

Good luck in advance, but most of all have fun preparing. Create your own team of 5-8 people and think of a team name plus outfit. Everyone can join, also companies and chair groups. This year around 1000 people can participate, which amounts to around 120 teams. They are required to get access to the terrain, because of this spectators are only allowed when there are tickets left, participants get priority. Make sure to get out of the summer holidays in tip-top shape, which in this case could also mean with a beer-belly. Maybe you will be the one taking the famous trophy home.

With kind and muddy (if the weather allows) regards, GrondboorCie
