Vacancy Student Assistant
Building digital environments for an online course on machine learning in weather and climate – one day a week September 2025 until December 2026
In short – we are looking for a student:
- Who is available to work one full day per week from September 2025 until December 2026 (ideally). When to do the work throughout the week is flexible.
- Is organized and can keep the overview
- Works efficiently
- With strong communication skills
- A quick learner on desktop applications like Brightspace
- Has an interest in meteorology and machine learning
Machine learning is rapidly becoming a key tool in all aspects of meteorology and climate science. To accommodate the exchange of knowledge on this topic, the MAQ chairgroup is involved in the development of a course on Machine Learning. This course will be hosted by the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF), and will run throughout 2026.
We are looking for a student assistant to
- create the teaching platform for the course (in Moodle, similar to Brightspace) that will host the course material
- edit videos (mostly pre-recorded lectures with slides) into publication-ready clips, using video-editing software
Help on the Moodle platform and educational media is available at WUR, whereas the teaching material will be delivered from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). As there are several partners involved in this project, it is key that you can keep the overview and work together with those partners with different expertise. You will be guided by Martin and Imme from the MAQ group.
Are you interested? Please send a message with your cv and short motivation to martin.janssens@wur.nl & imme.benedict@wur.nl. We aim on short conversations with interested students in July, starting the one day per week job in September 2025.
Call for student assistents in period 1 (Introduction Environmental Sciences)
Do you want to supervise first-year students in group work in the first four weeks of period 1? For September we are looking for group supervisors again for the first-year course Introduction to Environmental Sciences (for BES, BIL, BLP and BSW programmes; coordinated by the Nematology chair group).
More than 300 students follow the course, and within the module we provide, they work in groups of 8- 10 students. Each group has its own supervisor, so we need approximately 30 supervisors each year. The subject of the course is to acquire fairly general academic skills, while writing a scientific poster. As a supervisor, you mainly guide the process, where detailed substantive knowledge of the subject is not necessary.
We are looking for MSc students with an affinity for education and/or coaching groups.
The module takes place in the first three and a half weeks of September (Sep 1 – Sep 24), 10 times a half day (entirely on campus): Mon, Wed and Fri, in the morning or afternoon (or for two groups: full days). This course is taught in parallel in the morning and in the afternoon. In the week before the course we organize an instruction day, so that everyone knows what the intention is and how best to guide such a group (date and time will follow). Earnings: max. 36 hours per group, student assistant rate (MSc phase).
Interested? Mail to ies.ywu@wur.nl (to Kasper ter Horst and Nina Oskam). Briefly describe your motivation and your affinity with education and/or supervising groups.
